Light Up New Mills 2023
Preserving the Past, Celebrating the Present: New Mills Heritage Unveiled
This year’s festival has shown the amazing community spirit in New Mills – as soon as the call went out in July, we were flooded with a fantastic variety of events, making the festival three weeks long instead of the usual two and showcasing the creative, sporting, informative and friendly town that New Mills is.
But we also realise that without the finale of the Lantern Procession there is a sense of disappointment, which we wanted to do something about. So, we asked you what you would like to do instead and how you would like to get involved. By far the most popular suggestion was to put on another ‘Light Up New Mills’ weekend which everyone can take part in. This time we have a theme to spark your ideas and inspire your creativity:
Light Up New Mills – Preserving the Past, Celebrating the Present: New Mills Heritage Unveiled
You’ve done this before and we’re asking if you can do it again; light up the whole of New Mills for an entire weekend by transforming our streets into magical, illuminated galleries! Here are just a few of the wonderful windows from Light Up New Mills 2020.
‘Light up New Mills’ will run from Thursday 28th September to Sunday 1st October, bringing the spirit of the Lantern Procession into our homes with an all-people-friendly, window-display-based walking trail for people to explore on foot, to see new places, or to see familiar places in a new way.
If you want to link in with the theme, here are some ideas which may help:
- New Mills Heritage Past: the geology, the river, industrial mills, cotton, calico, farming, a look at the previous uses of your shop, the old buildings. Try New Mills Local History Society for more information or pop into the Heritage Centre in High Lea Park for inspiration!
- Celebrating the Present: The community, the local businesses, the creativity, the new uses for old buildings, the walks and trails, landscape and nature, outdoor activity, the festival, the carnival, other New Mills annual events, and whatever you love about living in New Mills.
We’re sure you will all have lots of your own ideas about how to light up and decorate your windows. If you have any questions please email us at info@newmillsfestival.co.uk or message us via facebook @New Mills Festival.
