Below are a few of our 2024 music-y offerings. The New Mills Festival’s much love Folk Night returns for a seventh outing on Saturday September 14th. Plus Proms in the Park is back…
PROMS IN THE PARK
Proms in the Park is between 4:15pm and 6:30pm (“doors” open 3:30pm) Sunday 22 September on the St George’s Parish Hall Playing field, tickets £4, or free for U12s. There will be a half hour interval. Home made cakes on sale, and don’t forget to bring your own chair.
You may think this isn’t going to be your kind of thing, but I say think again! When Proms in the Park appeared in my calendar last year I wasn’t really sure, but decent weather, a chilled afternoon, and a good cake selection drew me in. And what did I get? I had tea and cake, and was part of a happy crowd of people, with our song sheets in front of us. The brass band got stuck in to a whole mix of anthems, old and new. I’m pretty sure I was enthusiastically singing along with some 1980s classics at one point. A good chance to put any shyness to one side and belt out some lyrics accompanied by the music of your local Thornsett Band. You can of course restrict yourself to some foot tapping, head nodding and tea sipping; all displays of enjoyment are welcome.
There’s more! There’ll be a raffle with prizes including a very special lantern created by our local stained glass art studio, LindaS Art Glass . It’s a very special piece with scenes from New Mills.

FOLK NIGHT VII
Saturday 14 September 7pm to 11pm at Torr Vale Mill, Tickets £15. The tickets for this ever popular night are selling quickly. This year the lineup includes Wreckless Eric, Laura J Martin (vocals, flute, mandolin, electronics), Chris Brain, and Run Remedy.
It’s an eclectic gathering taking us from the hits of the 1970s (think “Whole Wide World”) right up to the present day with Chris Brain only having emerged in Leeds in 2022. Run Remedy comes from somewhat further away than Leeds, as you’ll no doubt discover, because you’re buying your ticket now, right?
Tickets are available at Priscilla’s Cards, the Beer Shed, the Torr Vale Tap and online here: https://www.
ORGAN AND CELLO RECITAL
The unexpected Editor’s Pick! Inspired by the joy of discovering Proms in the Park 2023, this year I will be heading up to Providence Church on Mellor Road for the Organ and Cello Recital. This is 3pm to 5pm on Sunday 29 September. Donations at the end of the performance, so a delightful pay as you feel / pay as you can approach, and no pressure to stretch your budget. There was something about the description of the event that tells me I have to be there! Our researchers are establishing if refreshments will be available. See what you think: https://
