Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan
Wednesday September 18 - 8:00 PM to Saturday September 21 - 10:00 PM
“Every Brilliant Thing” by Duncan Macmillan is a profoundly moving and uplifting one-person play that explores themes of mental illness, depression, and the beauty of life through the lens of a young narrator. The story begins with a seven-year-old child who learns that their mother is in the hospital after a suicide attempt. In an effort to cheer her up, the child starts compiling a list of all the brilliant things in life worth living for, beginning with simple pleasures like “ice cream” and “water fights.”
As the narrator grows up, the list expands to encompass more nuanced and deeply personal joys, becoming a poignant reminder of life’s inherent beauty amidst its darkest moments. The play is uniquely interactive, inviting audience members to participate in the storytelling, which creates a communal experience that mirrors the collective nature of coping with mental health issues.
“Every Brilliant Thing” blends humor and heartache, making it an emotionally resonant piece that highlights the importance of human connection and the small joys that can be found even in the bleakest of times. Macmillan’s sensitive and insightful writing, combined with the engaging format, ensures that the play not only entertains but also fosters a deeper understanding and empathy towards mental health struggles.
