Friday, September 13, 2024 - 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
NEW MILLS LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY FESTIVAL LECTURE:
Dr. MARGARET MURRAY 1863-1963
Our Festival event features two great ladies of Egyptology who carried out groundbreaking work with the Egyptian Collection at the Manchester Museum. Our Speaker Prof. Emerita Dr Rosalie David is retired curator of the Manchester Museum Collection and founder of the KNH Centre for paleopathology. Her subject is Dr Margaret Murray: pioneering Egyptologist, archaeologist and palaeopathologist. Born in India in 1863, Margaret Murray was the first woman to pursue a full-time career in Egyptology. She was a student of Sir William Flinders Petrie – the “Father of British Egyptology”- at University College London, where she later held academic posts. She excavated in several countries, and during a period of secondment to the Manchester Museum, she led a multidisciplinary team who produced groundbreaking research on two mummies in the museum’s collection. She published over 80 books and articles on ancient Egypt, including an autobiography to celebrate her hundredth year. This talk will consider the significance and contribution her life’s work has made to present-day Egyptology.
Dr Murray was one of the first to examine human remains to see what they could tell about their life style. Dr David many years later was the first to put a mummy through a catscan and to work with forensic artist Richard Neave on facial reconstruction.
Lecture starts at 7:15pm. Admission is free including a buffet and drinks.
Buffet will be provided by New Mills Town Council. Drinks by Local History Society
